As my pastor was discussing the Great Commission last Sunday, it occurred to me that there are two types of nouns and one verb for this single word. “Commission” can be a body of people tasked to the same work as a group. “Commission” can be an engagement of work specifically requested of an artisan, expert, or skilled professional. And yet, “commission” can also be a portion of profit or reward brought about by the completion of work. And in the context of our mission to reach the lost, all three apply.
As a church body the responsibility of bearing witness to God’s salvation is shared by all. We are a worldwide “commission” that has been “commissioned” to accomplish a great work of ministry for God. And in doing so, not only are we benefitted by the added souls, but we also receive a “commission” from God for our labors because blessing follows obedience.
It is a relief to know that I do not have to try to save the world on my own. God has provided people in every land to participate in the rescue of lives. And it can be surprising how simple things can affect people. A smile, kind word, expression of patience or gratitude can all be enough to open a conversation that leads to freedom for someone.
